Two security guards, Cornelius Muchikange and Nesbert Kachungwe (both 35), have been charged with theft after allegedly stealing US$53,000 from the scene of a robbery at Quest Financial Services.


The Allegation:

Muchikange and Kachungwe were part of the security detail that responded to the robbery at Quest Financial Services, where a larger sum of US$710,000 was stolen. During the robbers' escape, a bag containing US$53,000 reportedly fell outside the building.

The guards are accused of finding the money, keeping it for themselves, and dividing it between them.

Court Appearance and Guilty Plea:

Both Muchikange and Kachungwe appeared in court yesterday and pleaded guilty to the theft charges. They are expected back in court today for sentencing.

Recovered Money and Alleged Spending:

Following a tip, police detectives investigated the guards and recovered stolen money used for purchases:

Muchikange:

Nissan Sulphy car (US$3,700)
Residential stand (US$6,000)
Lobola payment (US$2,500)
Claims remaining money was taken by fake police officers (US$15,000)

Kachungwe:

Nissan AD Van (US$6,100)
Building materials (US$1,000)
Claims remaining money was taken by fake police officers (US$7,000)
