Former opposition figure Eddie Cross has come to the defense of business tycoon Kudakwashe Tagwirei, asserting that his riches were earned through legal means rather than just political connections.
Tagwirei's financial success can be attributed to his investments in Zimbabwe's fuel industry and various mining projects. Despite a reported multibillion-dollar deal that saw him ousted from Sakunda Holdings by Trafigura, his business ventures continued to thrive.
Although his ties to Zanu-PF led to sanctions from the US, Cross, a former MDC leader, highlighted that Tagwirei's wealth was not solely a product of political affiliations.
Cross emphasized, "Tagwirei, once known as Queen B, built his fortune independently. Prior to Trafigura's involvement, he already owned a major Zimbabwean company. His subsequent collaboration with Trafigura propelled his business into a global trading powerhouse."

"He is a self-made billionaire who used his own resources. His success stories reflect Zimbabwe's potential," Cross added.
Cross, a former RBZ Monetary Policy Committee member, has criticized some of Tagwirei's projects, including opposing the construction of a second fuel pipeline from Beira.
Although Tagwirei was once seen as wielding significant influence over President Mnangagwa's administration and was nicknamed Queen B, unverified reports have linked him to the government's Command Agriculture program, which provided farmers with inputs in exchange for a portion of their harvest.
