The Digital Shepherd: How Terry Maphosa Built a Rural Empire from Twitter and a Dream
Mhondoro Ngezi • Agrotech & Innovation • 2026
The Algorithm Meets the Soil. In the modern Zimbabwean landscape, few narratives resonate with as much grit and authenticity as that of Terry Maphosa. Armed with little more than a smartphone and a relentless vision, Maphosa has transformed the quiet village of Mhondoro Ngezi into a beacon of high-impact entrepreneurship. Through his brand, KwaTerry Chickens, he has effectively dismantled the myth that rural life is a barrier to success, proving that a global brand can indeed be managed from a village kraal.

Maphosa’s journey is a masterclass in vertical integration. By turning the frustration of unemployment into a thriving agricultural ecosystem, he has bypassed traditional gatekeepers, using social media as his primary storefront. Today, KwaTerry stands as more than a poultry business—it is a cultural movement that inspires a new generation of Zimbabweans to find gold in their own backyard, blending ancestral wisdom with 21st-century digital tools.
The Social Storefront
Terry’s "Twitter-to-Table" model has achieved what many city-based firms fail to do: building a community that buys into the story, not just the product.
From Frustration to Farming
Born and raised in Village 6, Turf Mhondoro Ngezi, Maphosa graduated from the University of Zimbabwe with a Political Science degree only to face the harsh reality of unemployment.
This frustration catalyzed a pivotal decision: returning to his roots. in 2017, he founded KwaTerry Chickens, starting with hardy, indigenous "roadrunner" chickens.
The Digital Catalyst
Maphosa recognized the limitations of traditional marketing and turned to social media. He didn't just sell chickens; he sold a lifestyle. By showcasing the authentic rural life—from fishing to building runs—he cultivated a massive, engaged following.
"I started pushing my hustle on Twitter and things slowly started to grow... Today I stand here as a grateful soul for the support you have showed to me," Maphosa stated.
Building the Hub
Success brought expansion. In 2021, he drilled a borehole, enabling a venture into horticulture and goat farming. This strategic move secured water security, a critical component for rural sustainability.
In 2022, he launched the KwaTerry Rural Restaurant. This was a masterstroke in value addition—transforming farm produce into a culinary experience. Hosting figures like Marvelous Nakamba, the venue is fast becoming a premier tourism hub.
Why It's a SuperBrand
Terry Maphosa's brand is built on his real-life journey. He sells resilience and rural pride, creating an unbreakable connection with his audience.
By moving from farming to a restaurant and tourism, he controls the entire value chain. He is not just a producer; he is selling a complete, authentic rural experience.
